The FSBDC Network is one of eight original SBDC pilot programs funded in 1976 by the U.S. Small Business Administration to successfully link the state's education system to community outreach, utilizing both faculty and students to aid in the development and education of the state's entrepreneurs and small business community. Today, the FSBDC is a statewide network of 29 centers involving seven of ten SUS institutions, six community colleges, two Chambers of Commerce and one county Economic Development Council. Additional outreach is provided at approximately 60 circuit rider locations, utilizing resource partners such as chambers of commerce, economic development councils, banks, etc.

Engaging Students in
Real-World Business Experiences

  • In conjunction with Brevard Community College's Institute for Business and Industry and Community Education's Super Summer program, the BCC SBDC offered a Young Entrepreneurship program this summer. Students ages 12-15 are working with local small business owner, Greg Jones, of Castalia Consulting. After spending the morning meeting with women business owners, the girls did a creativity exercise called “Product in a Box” in which smaller groups worked together to make a commercial product out of a variety of items in a box.

One student works 24 hours per week and the other works 20 hours. The student helping to coordinate the Office Depot seminars, Rizmeer Rizak, is president of the student chapter of the American Marketing Association and a student government senator. The FAU SBDC Festival Plaza office is already teaching classes about what electronic resources will best suit the endeavors of the small business owner and is looking forward to adding the computer training lab at the Main Library to its roster.
